Finding Total With Mid Value

Concept Explanation

Finding Total With Mid Value

Order is known as sequence. For example left, right, top, bottom, ascending and descending.

Rank: The process of determining the position or place of a person or a thing on the basis of comparison or relative position of other person or thing is called ranking. There are two types of questions based on ranking test which in as follows. Rank is known as position in the given sequence.

Type of Rank: There are two types of Rank :

(1) Base Rank : When rank of object is given from end.

For example- A is 4th from left end.this the case of the rank with respect to the base or  Base rank

(2) Reference Rank: When rank of one object with reference to another object is given.

For example - A is 2nd to the right of B. In this case the rank of A given in reference to another object that is B or we can say Reference rank

Finding Total Value With Mid Value: The Total number of persons can be calculated if we know rank of one person from left end and the rank of another person from the right end. The values required to find total Number when the number of persons in between i.e. Mid Number : Value  is given.

  • Rank of one person from one end.
  • Rank of another person from another end.
  • Mid Number
  • In these type of questions there can be two situations i.e.  Mid number (Simple Case) and Mid number (overlap case) so the formula for both the cases is required to find total number. By using Mid Number (Simple Case) formula, we will get maximum total number and by using Mid Number (overlap case). Formula we will get minimum total number.

Illustration: In a row, Ram is 15th from the left end and Rohan is 12th from the right end and there are 4 persons sitting between them. Then find total number of person in a row?

    A. 22                B.  21                 C. 29               D. 25

    Answer: E

    Solution: It is given that

Rank of Ram from the left end = 15

Rank of Rohan from the right end = 12

Number of persons between Ram and Rohan i.e. Mid Number = 4

To find Total Number of Persons= ?

From the question it is not clear that this is a simple case or an overlap case. So we will use both the formulas to find the total number of persons.

To find the maximum total  number of persons we will use the formula for simple case.

Mid Number ( Simple Case)= Total Number - ( Rank of Ram from left end + Rank of Rohan from right end)

Total Number = Mid Number ( Simple Case) + ( Rank of Ram from left end + Rank of Rohan from right end)

                          = 4 + 15 + 12 = 31

To find the minimum total  number of persons we will use the formula for overlap case.

Mid Number ( Overlap Case)= ( Rank of Ram from left end + Rank of Rohan from right end) - (Total Number + 2)

Total Number = ( Rank of Ram from left end + Rank of Rohan from right end) - (Mid Number + 2)

                          = (15 + 12) -( 4 + 2)

                          = 27 - 6 = 21

On analysing the options given we find 21 as option B where as 31 is not given as option. Hence the correct option is B
